Arequipa
Walking Tour
por la ciudad
Arequipa's UNESCO-listed historic center, walked the way locals walk it: white sillar streets, hidden courtyards and everyday corners, with someone who grew up here.
Our home, on foot
The White City, one street at a time
Arequipa isn't a city you tick off a list. It's a city you wander. Its historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is carved almost entirely from sillar, a pearly white volcanic stone that seems to hold the afternoon light. Three volcanoes, Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu, stand watch over it all.
This walk isn't a script or a checklist. It's the Arequipa we know from a lifetime of living here: the shortcuts, the quiet patios, the plaza benches, the stories our grandparents told us. Come walk it with us.
Why you'll love this
A city carved from volcanoes
Nearly the whole historic center is built from white sillar stone, quarried from the volcanoes around the city. In the right light, the streets truly glow.
Courtyards hiding in plain sight
Behind heavy wooden doors and carved facades, colonial courtyards open up in sunlight and bougainvillea. Without a local, you'd walk right past them.
Real, everyday Arequipa
Plazas where neighbors catch up, markets in full swing, the small daily rituals of the White City. Not a museum, a living home.
Stories from someone who grew up here
Legends, family memories and the little details guidebooks miss, told by a local who has walked these streets their whole life.
What you'll experience
We'll wander through the heart of the historic center: the main historical buildings of the White City, the arcades of the Plaza de Armas, and colonial cloisters whose carved sillar architecture holds centuries of history.
We'll step into the tambos, ancient lodgings that were fundamental to Arequipa's daily life for centuries, and follow picturesque cobblestone streets where traditions and legends have been passed down from generation to generation.
And to finish, the reward: a beautiful viewpoint with a panoramic view of the three volcanoes that watch over the city, Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu.
